Thomas Anthony Dooley III (January 17, 1927 – January 18, 1961) was an American physician who worked in Southeast Asia at the outset of American involvement in the Vietnam War. While serving as a physician in the United States Navy and afterwards, he became known for his humanitarian and anti-communist political activities up until his early death from cancer. Verne E. Chaney was born ca. 1895 in Coloma, Wisconsin. He was employed by the Home Telephone Company in Joplin, Missouri, in 1910 and then by the Theodore Gary & Co. (a telephone firm) in 1912. On June 4, 1917, Chaney enlisted in the 2nd Missouri Field Artillery Regiment of the National Guard and on August 5, 1917, the regiment was called into federal service as the 129th Field Artillery.
